Walter Henry Hughes (1884-1917)
London man served with DLI commemorated on Arras Memorial
Walter was born in Tottenham in 1884. His parents were Robert and Mary and he had five siblings, Mary, Sidney, Albert, Henry and May. He married Lilian May Smith on 3 August 1913 and they had two children, Walter and Edith.
Walter worked as a printers’ assistant and at enlistment his address was given as 13 Apperley Street, Hackney.
Walter enlisted at Bethnal Green on 8 June 1916 and joined 11th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. He was given the service number 34292.
On 23 October 1916 he transferred to the 10th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry and was given a new service number, 43319.
Walter was killed in action on 9 April 1917.
His name appears on the Arras Memorial and in the Durham Cathedral Book of Remembrance.
