Homer Reginald Herring (1896-1917)


Brighton schoolmaster served in 5th DLI commemorated on the Arras Memorial


Homer Reginald Herring was born in 1896 in Brighton, Sussex, the son of Homer and Grace Mary Herring who had five other children. In 1901 he was living in Haywards Heath, and in 1911 was at school in Tunbridge Wells.

He joined the 1st/5th Battalion London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade) and served in France from 4th November 1914 to 11th February 1915. He was transferred to the Inns of Court O.T.C. on 7th May 1915 and he joined the 5th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry as a 2nd Lieutenant on 12 July when he gave his occupation as schoolmaster. He was commissioned on 22nd July and a month later he was appointed Temporary Lieutenant. He was ranked as a Captain when he was killed on 23 April 1917 at the second Battle of the Scarfe.
