Robert Gair (1883-1917)
Grocer’s Assistant from Annfield Plain served with 21st and 18th DLI commemorated Arras Memorial
Robert Gair was born in Kyo, Annfield Plain in 1883. His parents were John and Mary Jane Gair and he had one brother and six sisters. He lived in Kyo, where he worked as a grocer’s assistant. He lived with his family until he married Isabella Wanless in 1914, and they had two children. He enlisted at Annfield Plain on the 12 April 1916 into the 21st Battalion, Durham light Infantry and he landed in France on 14 October. He was transferred to the 18th Battalion (The Pals) on 27 October and was killed on 3 May 1917.
