Thomas Chapman (-1917)

Durham man served with 6th DLI commemorated on Arras Memorial

Thomas Chapman enlisted with the army at Barnard Castle after the outbreak of the war, he was assigned to the 6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry. He deployed to France were he would have fought in the battle of Arras. This was an important engagement for British as they attempted to break the German defensive positions along the Hindenburg line.

6 DLI were attached to the 50th Northumbrian Division and engaged in action south of the Scarpe River during the battle of Arras, this is likely where Thomas was killed on the 14th of April 1917. For his service he received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

As his body was not identified for individual burial, he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
