Joseph Robert Crone (1869-1925)
Veterinary surgeon from South Shields served in Italy
The end of June 1914 saw Veterinary-Lieutenant Joseph Robert Crone at a training camp with the 4th Northumberland Howiter Brigade in Bellingham and Redesdale in Northumberland. Crone was already the Veteran of the Boer War and had established a veterinary practice in South Shields.
There must have been immense demand for vets to care for animals at the Front and Joseph first set foot in France on 20 April 1915. According to his school’s “register” of old boys who participated in the First World War, Joseph also served in Voghera, Italy where the 1st Veterinary Hospital was established.
According to his obituary the First World War “broke down his health” and he died in the War Pension’s Hospital, Newcastle of heart trouble.
