John Clarney (1888-1916)
Sacriston man served with the 1/8th Durham Light Infantry killed in action
Corporal John Clarney was the son of John and Mary Ann Clarney from Sacriston. He had three siblings, Henry, Maggie, and Jane. He worked as a coal miner specialising in stonework. He married Frances Lowery and went to Newcastle to live with her and her family before the war. It is unclear whether he and Frances had any children. He served on the front lines with the 8th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. He was killed on 5 November 1916, however this wasn’t reported until 2 February 1917 by the Chester le Street Chronicle.
