Darlington National Shell Factory


Works on North East Railway land produced wartime munitions


Type: Industrial

In the summer of 1915, a National Shell factory was started in the area of the North Eastern Railway Company locomotive works, on land at the North Road Works site, in Darlington. It continued in operation until 1918, and was subsequently demolished.

i) NE Railway Company acted as sub-contractors to Armstrong Whitworth, factory built adjacent to locomotive works
ii) not strictly a NPF (National Projectile Factory), but a nationalised munitions factory specialising in large shells.
