Martin James Morrison (1893-1972)


Elton born man served with Durham Light Infantry in First and Second World Wars


Martin James Morrison was born in 1893 in Elton, County Durham. Not many years later, his family moved to Faceby, Yorkshire, where he was living until he enlisted the army.

Morrison served with 5th Battalion Durham Light Infantry, becoming a Second Lieutenant on 29th August 1914 and Lieutenant on 27th March 1915. The 18th April of that year he entered in France with this battalion. For his service, he was awarded the Military Cross on 4th June 1917. Two bars were later added to it (the 16th and 24th of September 1918).

After surviving the war, Martin Morrison was put into the Territorial Force Reserve on 3rd June 1922 and called up again for the Second Wold War on 24th August 1939. This time, he mainly served with 10th DLI.

At some point of his service, he was promoted to Captain, and only in 1949 he relinquished a commission on age grounds.

He lived the rest of his life in Yorkshire, where he died in 1972, aged 79.
