Godfrey Laird Rutherford (1891-)

Hampshire man served with Durham Light Infantry

Godfrey Laird Rutherford was born in Highclere, Hampshire, around 1891. He lived with his family at least until 1911, when they were still at Highclere. For a short period of time, they seem to have moved to Marylebone, in London, where they were living in 1901 as boarders.

It seems likely that Godfrey moved to the north and enlisted in the DLI while he was living in Norton, Stockton-on-Tees.

He served with 5th DLI and was sent to France on 18 April 1915. Five months later, Rutherford was promoted to Second Lieutenant on 15th September. The year after, he was promoted to Lieutenant on 7th February (The London Gazette recorded the promotion on 10th August 1917). Finally, he was promoted to Captain.

He was mentioned in dispatches on 21st December 1917 and was awarded the Military Cross on 1st January 1919.
