James Edward Wilkinson Bell (1898-)


Gateshead man served with Durham Light Infantry


James Edward Wilkinson Bell was born in Gateshead, where he was living with his family when he enlisted into the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) on 19 October 1917, numbered 73603.

After training with 4th DLI at Seaham, he was posted to 18th DLI on 9 February 1918. On his arrival in France the draft was re-directed to 1/6th DLI. There he was wounded in the heel. On 24 March 1919, he was transferred to 1/5th South Staffordshire Regiment and renumbered 54034. On 20 September 1919, Bell was put into the 2nd South Staffordshire Regiment.
