The Building was purchased by the governing body of the Eye Infirmary in 1913. During the war the buildings were used for military casualties (perhaps with eye injuries but this is unconfirmed), and as a depot for the Voluntary Aid Detachment hospitals around Sunderland for donated clothes and gifts for soldiers.
