Harold Goundry Clark (1897 - 1972)


Served with the Friend's Ambulance Unit


Harold Goundry Clark was born on 8/12/1897 in Darlington and his father was Frederick Clark.

He spent part of his school life at the Friends School, Ackworth, near Pontefract and is listed as a 13 year-old boarding scholar on the school’s 1911 Census return.

On joining the Friends Ambulance Unit, he gave his address as Summerhill, Abbey Hill, Darlington. He gave his occupation as Architects pupil and stated he was a member of the Society of Friends. On his personnel record cards, his qualifications are listed as garage experience, knowledge of electric fittings and a small knowledge of French.

He joined the Friends Ambulance Unit on 19/8/16 and completed his training at the Quaker Training Camp at Jordans, Buckinghamshire from 19/8/16 to 21/9/16.

He arrived in Dunkirk on 5/10/16 and attended the Headquarters Instruction School.

From 23/11/16, he worked as an orderly in the Section Sanitaire Anglaise 14 (a motor ambulance convoy). He also worked as part of Section Sanitaire Anglaise 13.

He is listed as having left the Foreign Section on 29/4/18 and then completed temporary work with connection to the Quaker’s work with Alien Emergencies. He was demobilised on 24/12/18.

He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal under his membership of the British Red Cross Society and the Order of St John of Jerusalem.
