Herbert Bewick Dees (1892-1965)

From Spennymoor, served with 18th Battalion DLI (Durham Pals). One of original Spennymoor Settlement artists.

Bert Dees, who was one of the original artists forming the Spennymoor Settlement Sketching Club, served briefly in the Durham Light Infantry during the Great War. In January 1916, after the death of his baby son, he was released to do war work at Redcar Steel Works. After the war he became a painter and decorator in Spennymoor and became a prolific artist, often giving his pictures as Christmas presents to his customers.
