Zeppelin Raid on Hebburn and Jarrow
59 bombs dropped, 72 people injured on 15 June 1915
From: 1915-Jun-15
Civil Parish: Hebburn
On the 15th of June 1915, the Zeppelin L.10, commanded by Kapitanleutnant Hirsch, started for an air raid on England with the Tyne as his intended target.
To avoid Tynemouth`s defences and to not trigger an early alarm, Hirsch was forced to approach the coast further north, at Blyth. The first bombs were dropped over Wallsend and the Hebburn collieries, where HMS Patrol sounded siren blasts that were not understood and the L.10 passed over them without further detection.
Hirsch then turned his attention to the engine construction department, Palmer`s works. Five incendiary and a total of seven high explosive bombs were dropped, causing severe damage. Seventeen men died, 72 were severely wounded.
On the way towards the coast at South Shields, the L.10 dropped bombs on several chemical works, causing further damage.
