Photograph albums of nurses

Ellinor Caldwell nee Walton's photographs of the Saint John's Ambulance Brigade Hospital at Etaples

While working as a nurse at the Saint John’s Ambulance Brigade at Etaples, Ellinor Caldwell nee Walton collected together a series of photographs which documented her war-time experience. According to her family, she was a keen amateur photographer and it some of the photographs in her albums were her own work. Others seem to have been taken by professional photographers and some are duplicated in the album of Veronica Nisbet:

This selection from her collection, which has been arranged into three“albums” and attached to this page, contains photographs of Ellinor and the nurses that she worked with at Etaples. These are largely off duty photographs: some of the nurses are in their civilian clothes (and even, in one case, in her dressing gown!). Ellinor labelled some her photographs so that we can identify Christine Tait, who also worked with Ellinor at the Etherley VAD hospital back in England, and who acted as bridesmaid at Ellinor’s wedding. It is also possibly to identify Muriel Batey who was Christine’s bridesmaid and who originated from Newcastle.
