Stretcher Bearer Collages - part 2

Created as part of the Michael Heaviside commemorations

On 12 July 1917, Michael Heaviside returned home to a hero’s welcome in Stanley, South Moor and Craghead. 100 years later the school children of the area are learning about the local man who won the Victoria Cross and what he did to deserve such an accolade. A Heritage Lottery Fund grant to Stanley Area Action Partnership has supported the recreation of part of Heaviside’s parade and a series of education workshops with local schools. The education sessions have been conducted by a partnership of Durham Light Infantry Collections and Durham County Record Office.

As part of the sessions the children have learnt about the role of the stretcher bearer because Michael Heaviside was a stretcher bearer for the Durham Light Infantry. In response to a number of archival sources they have created collages that illustrate the job undertaken by Michael and his colleagues.

Contributed by Year 5, Saint Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Stanley
