Photograph of the manoeuvres of 5th Durham Light Infantry, 1910

Pre-war picture postcard with a message

This photograph was posted the 17th of July, 1910, at Castle Eden. It was sent to Miss Ada Smith, 14 Belgrave Street, Argyle Square, London, from Harry. The message reads:

“Drill Hall Castle Eden, 17/7/1910.
Dear Ada, Polly tells me she has wrote and said that you would not be able to get here the same night. This is wrong for there is a late train from West Hartlepool on Saturday night which leaves for Castle Eden at 11:10 pm. So you would get in nicely by this train. Please tell Emily this. I dare say we will meet you at West Hartlepool. I am home again + am not sorry, I suppose you have heard about our Colonel shooting himself, sad wasn’t it. I am off to Saltburn for the funeral tomorrow. Harry.”

Date: 1910
