Photograph of 6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry Band

Picture postcard taken 1917

This photograph of the band of the 6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry was taken in France on 4 September 1917.

There is a message written on the back of it:
“Dear Mother this is our band + the fellow who I have marked over his hat is my chum who I came from England with. He gave this to me yesterday so I am sending it to you. Harry. I will have some taken from it when I come home as it is the only one I can get”.

Date: 4 Sep 1916

Great image and message ,
I have also got a photo postcard of the 6th D.L.I Band Dated 1915 ,
It's pretty clear too ,
I shall see about getting it scanned and added ,

my grandfather Joseph Summerson enlisted at Bishop Auckland in 1914 and served with the 6th D.L.I , he was gassed and got caught by the Germans in 1918 ,
He spent the last months of the war in a forced Labour Camp and along with others, was made to work at Berlin Gasworks,
I have a couple of images of him with others there , which possibly taken at the end of the war ,
Thank you
Colin

Thomas Joseph Carroll joined the DLI as a Drummer Boy under his Colour Sergeant Bill Condon, and served with Bob Harburn, W, Lancaster, and Bobby Baron. Does anyone have any further information?
