Postcard of 18th Battalion DLI (Durham Pals) at Ripon.


Informal group photograph taken in 1915


The message on this postcard reads: “Dear F this is a photo of our hut and contains seven Maryport bhoys, yours truly is in the centre about to have my hair cut by the company barber. Joe Thompson from Carlisle who used to work at Redmaynes in Maryport is sitting in the tin. G Carter.”

Private George Carter, who signed the letter, was numbered 18/985 and survived the war. Private Joe Thompson, who is referred on the writing, was numbered 18/622 and killed in action at Gavrelle in 1917.
